SAVONA

Our week long visit to Savona will be remembered by many Laffeymen because of the swell and long liberties they enjoyed. From the second day until our departure, large ground swells and intermittent rough and choppy seas caused discomfort and inconvenience.  Boating had to be discontinued many times,  usually after half the liberty party had gone ashore, resulting in many men spending the night ashore.  Hotels being at a premium, many of our stranded Laffeymen were forced to revert to their scouting and camping-out days.  Even though anchored, the Laffey rolled constantly and heavily, sometimes rolling fifteen or twenty degrees.  The boat crews did an outstanding job under trying conditions and those who went ashore on liberty had a very enjoyable time in this small Italian city.
