JOHN GARY "POREBOY" OWENS, JR.

John Gary "Poreboy" Owens, Jr., 75, of Castle Hayne, NC, passed away on Monday, October 20 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

After completing high school, John served in the US Navy aboard the USS Laffey during the Korean War. John came to Castle Hayne in 1955 as a State Highway Patrolman; after 5 years with the Highway Patrol, John left to pursue many different venues as a hard working, self-employed, entrepreneur.

John was the son of Dora Jean Horne and John Gary Owens, Sr., of Goldsboro, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by a sister, Mary Olive Owens Weede. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Wood Faulkner of the home, a step-son, Eddie Faulkner and wife Tonya of Youngsville, 2 daughters, Beverly Owens of Wilmington, and Dr. Pam Owens of Sunset Beach. and a son, John Richard Owens of Wilmington. In addition, left to carry on his memory is a brother, Carlyle Owens (Carolyn), 3 sisters, Doris Huffman (Donald), Joyce Tompkins (Jim) and Candy Smith (Jay). John is also survived by one granddaughter, Hannah, one step-granddaughter, Lauren, and one great grandson, Spencer.

A memorial celebration service will be held at Wilmington First Pentecostal Holiness Church on Saturday, October 25, at 1:00 pm with visitation at 12:00 in the church fellowship hall. Rev. Rodney Knowles will officiate at the service. After cremation, his ashes will be buried at a later time in a private family service.
