Photographs from Ari Phoutrides' Album

A picture of our sister ship, the USS Merideth (DD 728).  She was hit by a mine on June 7 and
sunk on June 8.

The famous church and part of the town square at Sainte Mere Eglise

Model figure suspended from the bell tower of the Ste Mere Eglise church
in memory of John Steele who suffered this sad fate.  He was wounded by the Germans, taken prisoner, and
then managed to escape from his captors.

This concluded our tour of the invasion areas.  I had hoped to visit Cherbourg and view the batteries that knocked the pants off our task group (TG 129.2) on June 25, however time did not prevail.  Maybe next time.
