both of them went right down into the living compartments
below and started large
fires below. About the same time that happened a plane dropped a 500 lb
bomb up
forward on the starboard and it went right and a group of 20 mm and through the
main
deck and blew up in the compartment below. Well the plotting room is right
next to the
spot where it blew up. When it went off it knocked us all down in the
plotting room
about that time I was really beginning to get scared. Then another two
planes hit our
mast and breaking it off part way. Well that was the last of the attacks.
It was all over
and we sure were glad of that because all the guns that we had left to fire was
just one
5" mount. Well we started to clean up the ship. She was on fire and
sinking too. The
fantail was all the way down in the water and still going down farther.
