Glenn Martin Setmire, "Wiz" 87, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, passed away Monday, November in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital.
He was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Forbes Road, a son of the late John and Mary "Szatmary" Setmire.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, June Eidem Setmire; a son, Mike Setmire, of Greensburg; a daughter, Sharry Setmire, of New Alexandria; a granddaughter, Jessica Setmire, of Pittsburgh; a sister, Josephine Bayura; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy. BM 2/c, USS Laffey crew member and, plank owner, onboard April 16, 1945, Glen was awarded the Purple Heart and many other medals. He also served on the USS Murphy.
Following retirement from the former Crown Creative Industries and Westmoreland Hospital, he was self-employed in lawn care. He enjoyed skating (ice and roller) and loved the game of golf. He took pride in his yard, flowers, and garden. His biggest enjoyment and source of smiles was dancing with his wife, June, and having family and friends over for a big Easter egg hunt.
He was a member of the BPOE, American Legion Post 981, VFW Post 33, the McKenna Center, and the USS Laffey Association.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, David Martin Setmire (1968); five brothers, John, Steve, Joe, Louis and Julius Setmire; four sisters, Elizabeth Geis, Marie Tarchis, Helen Kubinec and Margaret Ann Setmire; and a sister-in-law, Becky Eidem. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg.
Final viewing and prayer will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Interment will follow with military honors in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McKenna Center, 973 Old Salem Road, Greensburg, PA 15601, or to the USS Laffey DD724 Association, 100 Landing Lane, Bluffton, SC 29909-6060.
