Get DIRTY on the USS Laffey
“The Ship That Would Not Die”
in Mt. Pleasant, SC !
If this is your first work party, please read the information below.
The primary goal of the USS Laffey Association’s week-long “Workparty” is to clean, repair, and improve museum displays (interior of the ship), as well as some mechanical, electrical, and plumbing projects on the USS Laffey (a historic museum ship that participated in D-Day (1944) and survived Kamikaze attack at Okinawa (1945)).
Additionally, we clean, prep, and repaint portions of the exterior of the ship. Cleaning, prepping and painting needs to be done primarily on decks where painters will stand on large flat surfaces without the need for ladders, nor scaffolding.
We also have duties that include light metal, electrical, and mechanical work. We have a wide variety of tasks that need to be done – ranging from very simple (running errands for supplies, food prep, computer work) to moderate strength and skills required. We have something for all physical abilities and skill sets, but you must be over 18 and in reasonably good health. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks/water are provided free of charge. We work at a moderate pace and safety is paramount!
Coffee is served at 7AM, followed shortly by breakfast, then an 8AM 10-minute briefing on the plan for the day, including work assignments for each individual. You will need to wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get a little paint on them. We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, safety glasses and work gloves.
Due to the location of the ship at the end of a pier and the requirement for one of our Association members to escort all helpers onto the property (free of charge, including parking), we must ask that you commit to an entire day of work, from 8AM until 5PM.
Feel free to call the President, USS Laffey Association, Mike Honsinger, 281-923-4969, with any questions, 10:AM – 10PM, Eastern time, any day of the week.
